A car we sold five years ago, has been properly serviced and has seen very little use.
Excellent body and Old English White paint. All new exterior chrome, wire wheels (wheels have been reconditioned) with new radials. New tan canvas convertible top and full tonneau cover, new side curtains, new seats (including frames and padding) new interior panels and carpets, immaculate dashboard with rebuilt gauges, all new switches and controls, dash is just beautiful and like new.
We even went over the body edges, rocker panels, and doglegs with a small kitchen magnet. Stuck everywhere. NO indication of plastic filler any where. And with excellent wood floors and a sturdy chassis, this car is as solid as any of the best MGAs.
Engine (as we were told) was recently expensive rebuilt, gas flowed cylinder head, slightly raised compression ratio, balanced bottom end, rebuilt twin SU carbs. As a guess, around 100hp. Down the road, performance feels like an early MGB (with its 98hp engine). Perhaps, as the English might say, 'quite lively.'
Rebuilt Ford T9 five speed transmission with a .82 fifth gear....with the MGAs 4.1 final drive, provides high gearing (3.36 :1 overall gearing), makes highway cruising quiet and relaxed. Car can easily cruise at 70, 80, 90 mph or more. Makes for a wonderful driving car, all synchromesh, closer ratios, easier to service, AND (of course) the fifth gear.
Disc brakes with new master cylinder, rack and pinion steering, coil spring front suspension, this was all sophisticated design for 1960.
New cloth covered wiring harness and mostly new electricals. NOTHING can ensure reliability more than a new wiring harness and new electricals....because, to be candid, a high proportion of problems with older British cars can be traced to the wiring. But not in this car.
We even added a modern fuse box with press in fuses to eliminate an issue with old fuses and fuse boxes. And a new digital stereo (doesn't help with reliability but makes driving just a bit more entertaining).
Top quality chrome luggage rack, carpeted trunk, new racing seat belts, new heater core, new hoses and lines, oil cooler with Aeroquip braided metal lines.
New radiator with twin electric cooling fans.
And as an excellent MGA, ride, steering, handling, and braking are all superb. No rattles, no vibrations, no shakes. Plenty of power, effortless shifting, and ready to drive anywhere and at most any speed.
